Why do I Need an NHS Health Check?

We know that you are at risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease and dementia increase with age. There are also certain things that will put you at even greater risk.

These include being overweight, being physically inactive, not eating healthy, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

One week before the appointment – you will require a blood test.

What Happens at the Check?

The check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and stroke. The check takes 30-40 minutes.

You will be asked some simple questions. For example, about your family history and lifestyle choices that may put your health at risk.

The nurse/HCA will record your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity.

We’ll check your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Medication Reviews

Patients who are prescribed repeat medication will have a medication review carried out by their GP or clinical pharmacist.

If the Doctor or clinical pharmacist does wish to see or speak with you; reception will contact you to confirm any appointments you need to book, for example, blood tests, blood pressure check, and arrange a follow-up phone call if required.
